INDIANAPOLIS - Jeff Popovich is returning to the college ranks.

"Jeff is someone that brings with him a wealth of experience at both the collegiate and professional levels," Harsin said in a school release. "He understands what this program is about, both our culture and our tradition, and he is excited to be part of it. We are thrilled to have him join our family."

Popovich joined the Colts' staff in 2016 as an assistant to head coach Chuck Pagano before becoming a defensive quality control coach last season.

He began his coaching career at his alma mater as a student coach in 2000, and then re-joined the staff as a grad assistant from 2005-06. He moved on to Florida International where he served as defensive backs coach and, later, special teams coordinator from 2007-2012, before starting a three-year stint as cornerbacks coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
